Japanese instruments

There is a wide range of Japanese traditional musical instruments with a great variety in each classification. The origin of these instruments, called wagakki (和楽器, literally Japanese instruments), reaches back into antiquity.

In previous times the Japanese classification of instruments followed the Chinese principle of dividing instruments into 8 categories based on the material of which they were made: metal, stone, silk, bamboo, gourd, clay, hide and wood. However, in Japan musical instruments are nowadays divided into percussion, strings and winds, the same as in the Western way.
